At Guangyang Secondary School, the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in STEM offers all lower secondary students a structured opportunity to apply what they learn in Science to real-world issues. Conducted during curriculum time, students engage in hands-on, project-based learning that builds both scientific understanding and essential life skills.
Our ALP is anchored in the theme of sustainability, with exciting modules on food security using hydroponics, renewable energy through solar-powered models and forensic science investigations. Students work in teams to solve problems, build prototypes and present their solutions, developing critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Through these experiences, they grow in confidence and global awareness and are ready to become future-ready contributors to society.
Key Programmes
Forensic Science Crime Scene Investigation
Secondary 2 students take on the role of crime scene investigators to solve a fictional case. They analyse evidence through fingerprinting, simulated drug tests and interpretation of an autopsy report. The module culminates in a written report. This engaging programme applies scientific knowledge in a real-world context, developing students’ inquiry, reasoning, and communication skills.

Renewable Energy: Solar Car Design
In this modular learning experience, Secondary 1 students delve into the topic of renewable energy by designing and testing solar-powered cars. As part of our Applied Learning Programme in STEM, this module forms one of several sustainability-themed units that build upon one another across levels. Through iterative prototyping, performance testing, and a friendly race challenge, students learn about energy conversion, forces and motion. This engaging, hands-on project cultivates problem-solving, creativity and teamwork, while fostering appreciation for sustainable technologies and their applications in daily life.
